Call Process

As we continue our search for a new associate pastor we want to keep everyone as up to date as possible. We have carefully and prayerfully formed a Call Committee to carry out the search process.  (See below for more information)

The Committee has had its initial meeting with Pastor Mike Robinson, the assistant to the bishop, to learn about the process.  They surveyed the congregation in early November to get a feel for the congregation’s interests. They used the information gathered in the survey to fill out our Ministry Profile. Our profile describes the mission of our congregation and provides a description of the gifts we are looking for in our new associate pastor. The Synod will use this information to provide us with potential associate pastor candidates.

Update 1/3/12 – Pr. Robinson has been working long and hard looking at our profile and is searching nationally for matching pastoral profiles.  We are hoping to have our list of potential candidates before the end of January! Then the call committee will have the opportunity to read those confidential profiles and begin discussing who might fit our mission.

The Committee will continue to work with the synod throughout the interview process. Keep an eye on the website and we will keep you informed! (Reminder – it is a LONG process!)

Update 2/7/12 – Next phase has begun! The Call Committee will be conducting initial interviews with four candidates, two men and two women, from around the country in mid-February.  As a first, these initial interviews will be done by Skype video conferencing.  We are looking forward to meeting the candidates and to this new adventure in Skype-ing!  We are hoping that it is much more pleasant and productive than the old conference calls.

Keep us in your prayers as we continue to work on the search for a new pastor!

Yvonne Moody (Committee Chair) has been a member of Zion for 10 years. She teaches Sunday School for 6th & 7th grades and has two girls involved with youth activities. “I am excited and honored to be on the Call Committee and I look forward to working through the process to find a pastor who will continue  to strengthen and grow our ministries here at Zion.” Contact Yvonne at 382-2201 [yrmoody@aol.com].

Jerry Nelson and his family have been members for twenty years. Jerry is currently on Church Council and serves as an adult guide for Confirmation classes.

Bill Farley joined Zion with his family over six years ago. He is passionate about our focus on mission and supporting the members of our Church. He went on Zion’s first short-term mission trip to Honduras and was Missions Director for the Mission Task Force. He is a current Stephen Minister and taught the 4-and 5-year-old Sunday School classes for several years. “I am honored to be asked to be on the Call Committee and help Zion find a new Assistant Pastor.”

Jana Marthis has been a member for approximately fifteen years, and is dedicated to the future of our church. She regularly participates in services as a lay reader, she is a trained Stephen Minister, and she and husband Rick co-teach the Fifth Grade Communion class, and encourage their children to be actively involved as well. “I look forward to welcoming an individual to our church community who fits our congregational needs.”

Tom Erchinger joined Zion in the Fall of 2009 with wife, Robin and son, Christian, now a high school junior. Tom is a surgeon in the Air Force, currently Chief of General Surgery at the San Antonio Military Medical Center. He is a lifelong Lutheran, and have been blessed by ELCA congregations in Dayton, Ohio

He is a retired Marine, and came to Zion from an inter-denominational church in San Diego, California. “I enjoy being in the company of people who love God and desire to develop relationships the way Jesus has instructed us. In the short time I have been here, I have learned that the people of Zion are blessed to be able to worship Him in spirit and truth, to have hearts of a servant, and the willingness to share our faith. I am honored to serve you in this capacity; call on me, freely.” John is at 557-4217 [jevans52@satx.rr.com].
